The 4th and assorted notes

Some assorted notes on the upcoming 4th of July and this weekend.

  • Don’t know how I missed this, but as of a few days ago it has been exactly one year since I moved in with Katie. Pretty amazing that it has already been a year. Let’s hope it is a lot more!
  • Katie and I both got tomorrow off for a 4-day weekend. Pretty rare that we both get to enjoy a long weekend.
  • We are taking advantage of the long weekend and heading up to Sunapee for a few days. I will have computer access of course, gotta love Wi-Fi.
  • Did anyone else hear one of the Red Sox owners on the Red Sox Pre-Game show say that the town of Sunapee, NH asked if the World Series trophy could be part of the celebration? I need to find out more! Who would have thought, the world series trophy visiting home?
  • After Saturday night, we are coming back to Manchester for a day and then heading out Sunday morning to Hampton for the day/night with Katie’s sister. Should be fun.
  • Podcasts rock.

Walking off the ledge

The past few days I have been trying to deal with the issue of my car insurance rates going up.

A day ago I e-mailed the lady at my local State Farm agency who I dealt with a year ago when I first got insurance through them.

The e-mail was long, but basically stated that I was being treated as if I was a 23-year-old punk kid who can’t drive just because of one accident in bad weather when I was only given 50% fault. I told her that my 6+ years of a perfect driving record (never have been pulled over, never until recently got into an accident) should have more bearing in my insurance rate. I also stated that I was far from the typical 23-year-old when it comes to driving safely and that I was very mature. Basically, the odds of me getting into another accident were next to nill for a long time…why jack up my rates so much that I would want to leave?

I then threatened to leave them and go to a competitor who offered a rate very similar to what I was getting before the accident happened.

Well I got an e-mail today back from her. She and another agent sat down and re-read everything about my accident, my driving record, etc. Turns out, they decided that I was not at fault for that accident and that State Farm made a mistake previously. Furthermore, my driving record will be wiped clean and I will regain all of the discounts I lost because of the accident. It will be as if I was never given fault for the accident.

I had always felt that I never had any fault in that accident, where bad weather and me reacting to another car sliding off the road caused me to get into the accident. This finally proves that I was right all along.

The e-mail shocked me. I actually dreaded reading it, thinking the odds of anything good in it being next to nill. Given all of the horror stories you hear about insurance companies, it is nice to once in awhile get ahold of someone who is human and who cares enough to help you out.

Car insurance sucks

Well I knew the day was coming and it came today. Just got a new renewal notice from my car insurance company and they are jacking up my insurance by $200+ for the next 6 months due to losing my 5 year safe driver discount thanks to my accident in February.

Luckly it doesn’t go into effect until August, so I should have time to shop around for a better deal and argue with my current company.

You would think that an insurance company would treat better a 23-year-old with a perfect driving record (never have been pulled over…never) except for one accident that was caused by bad weather despite being extremely careful to not get into an accident.

I’ll teach them a lesson. I’ll go find a much better deal and they will lose a customer.

Bad Behavior

I had seen lots of bloggers mentioning the Bad Behavior plugin for WordPress, which intends to stop blog spammers from ever reaching your site…nevermind being able to post comment spam.

So I have installed it on this blog to check it out and see how it does. Since it has gotten great reviews, I have completely deleted my WordPress blacklist to see how effective this plugin is.

Assuming it ends up working well, I will install the Bad Behavior Stats plugin to show my visitors that this blog is spam free 🙂

Beklin USB hub

Got a pleasant surprise when I arrived home tonight and the Belkin 7-port USB 2.0 hub that I ordered on Monday had arrived.

The coolest thing about it is that there are 5-ports on the back (coincidently, just enough for all of my devices: printer, scanner, external hard drive, iPod, camera) and then two ports accessable from the top of the device (perfect for flash drives and anything temporary). What a stellar design. Bonus points for it matching my external hard drive (a Seagate 120 GB) and for the most part my computer.

This replaces the 4-port USB 2.0 hub that I used before today.

Top 10 Requests for iTunes 5

iPodlounge has an article titled iTunes 5: Our Top Ten Requests.

I would add 3 simple requests to theirs:

  1. Fix Sound Check: Use ReplayGain, which is far more accurate in making every song’s volume stay the same and does not degrade the sound quality. Also add an album mode.
  2. Gapless support: Make it enjoyable to listen to an entire Pink Floyd album without hearing a 1/2 second gap between tracks.
  3. Toast pop-up: I would love it if a little Toast window popped up in the bottom right-hand corner when a song changes, complete with artist, song, album, and the album artwork.

That is all I ask. Please Apple, do this for my sanity!
